Health Outcomes Core

The Health Outcomes Core (HOC) is headed by Co-directors Dr. Laurel Copeland and Dr. John Zeber who are jointly appointed at Scott & White and the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). HOC conducts health services research focusing on severe mental illnesses (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depressive disorder) and the management of care for complex patients with medical and psychiatric comorbidity. Topics of research include patient, provider and system factors pertaining to effective care coordination; racial disparities in health services utilization; transition into the Veterans Health Administration system; post-deployment health issues; and policy and economic implications related to treatment adherence. HOC also has expertise in study design and project evaluation, extraction and reduction of administrative data, derivation of process of care and outcome measures from archival medical record data, and statistical analysis.

As associate director of CAHR, Dr. Copeland provides mentoring in health services research methods to residents and junior investigators at CTVHCS and Scott & White, nearby Fort Hood Darnall Army Medical Center, and the Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans (located in Waco, TX).
