The Office of Biosafety strives to ensure safe research procedures and provide a safe and healthy working environment for Scott & White Healthcare staff, students, visitors and the surrounding community.
The General Laboratory Safety training is required annually for all individuals who will be performing any laboratory work or experiments. The training covers general laboratory safety, a brief overview of some chemical, biological, radiological and physical hazards. It also reviews the OSHA Hazardous Chemicals in the Laboratory Standard (29CFR1910.1450), the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and controls.
The BSL-2 training is required annually for all individuals who will be working within a BSL-2 facility. The training expands on the biological hazards information provided in the General Laboratory Safety training reviewing hazardous procedures, methods for protection and prevention, disinfection and decontamination, and emergency response procedures.
This training is required annually for all individuals who work in an area with or handle blood, blood products, or any other potentially infectious material that may carry bloodborne pathogens. The training reviews the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (29CFR1910.1030), control measures, and emergency response.
Shipping of Biohazardous Materials Training
This course will be offered as needed by the Biosafety Officer as an in person hands on training. This course will cover the requirements for shipping biohazardous materials. Renewal of this training course will be required every 2 years.
